How good ‘Are’ you?
Okay, let’s see what you can tell ME about ME. Imagine I am a client, and you have to unearth as much as you can, then distil it, and write it – as though delivering a reading. Get the idea? It’s a chance to try out your info gathering skills without finding yourself accused of spying on somebody or being a deranged stalker.

You can practice your Hot reading skills in complete safety. You can resort to as much trickery and imaginative use of information gathering as you like… Just don’t “blow your cover” in the process! Anything that’s sent to me will be read as though I were a client receiving a “reading”…

It will take cunning. It will take imagination. It will take boldness… do you have what it takes?

Original post located here. To view it you must be a member of The Magic Cafe and have access to the “Inner Thoughts” forum. It is not so easy to get access. My claim can be verified both through Drew directly or through The Magic Cafe’s administration.

Drew promised a SIGNED and bent spoon from legendary spoon bender Uri Geller. Magicians from all over the world competed in this private competition. I couldn’t believe it, I actually won the contest and Drew sent me the spoon as promised!

There were a few taunts from some very reputable magicians aimed at anyone who was a cold reader:

I hope those that profess to being king of the cold readers and online psychics will have a go at this… otherwise – *puck puck puck puck puck* chicken!

Drew got a few good hits. Here are some of his responses to the readings that came in. One of Drew’s comments is in regards to my attempt:

Good Lord, there’s one in already. Now, I don’t know if there are a couple of lucky hits or the mentalist in question has somehow managed to track down my garage mechanic… nah, that’s impossible. Impressive stuff, in the main, though! Of course, this person might actually be psychic; I’m beginning to wonder!

I’ve just had a remarkable “hit” from somebody. Now either this person is phoning my friends and associates or… Hey, I’m getting worried about the skeletons in my closet now! I’m impressed. Come on, you lot, let’s see some real application of imagination and detective skills.(PLEASE – no more actual “straight” readings from tarot cards. I’m looking for individuals who can use contacts of contacts / aerial photographs / maps / research to find things out that will completely fry me.)

Somebody has been phoning the newspapers here – nice try – and spoke to one of my contacts. Now (and this is funny) they used the pseudonym “MacTavish”. It’s a joke Scottish name! GREAT try, though.

Many others tried, but they failed. So how did I do it? Was it a combination of technical trickery or genuine mind reading?

Spiritual beliefs are still a driving force in today’s world. With so many different cultures and viewpoints, a Magician must choose his words carefully. Many are of the opinion that only backwater rubes still believe in witchcraft, demons and spirits. These misinformed Magicians impose their own atheist beliefs on others while demeaning all types of spiritual notions.

Mentalism is the greatest offender in the realm of stage magic. Demonstrations of telepathy, psychokinesis and other supernatural abilities are often pushed to the point of being shocking to the lay person. As a result, people of spiritual beliefs can easily be offended even in this technological age.

Consider the following scenario: One evening at an event I was unpacking my gear. While I was setting up, an advertisement sign fell from it’s mount. As the sign came crashing down, I uttered “Hmm.. Poltergeist”. An innocent comment, or so I thought.

By chance or coincidence, a staff member overheard my comment. As it happens, her friend was experiencing paranormal issues in her life. She asked me what happened, so I told her that the sign fell down. I jokingly offered that it might be poltergeist. Her eyes lit upand she immediately got very scared. I couldn’t resist throwing out a cold reading. As I feigned dizziness I asked the her: “Whoa.. Who’s name starts with the letter A?”

Now she was searching for a way to bring meaning to my cold reading. It was not a direct hit though. Several minutes later I offered an addition to the original reading: “No! It’s not an A, it’s a C!” This time I hit the bull’s eye. Staff members began coming out from the backroom.

A waitress who’s name starts with C had been experiencing torment in her new apartment. Whether her experience was spiritual or psychological is not the issue. Her fear was very real. Her friends were equally disturbed. My first instinct was to push it as far as I could with more cold readings and even more mentalism effects. I took a deep breath and realized the real fear in their eyes. I certainly did not wish to scare these people even further. Clearly, I had stumbled onto a landmine and I needed to defuse it. As a working Magician, you may be tempted to take this type of situation as far as you can. Before you make a decision, please read the rest of this article.

I continued setting up my show as usual. After no more than 15 minutes, the girl who’s name begins with C entered the establishment with along with her mother. The fact that I “guessed” her first initial was too much for her to handle. Someone from the establishment had called her to let her know what I had said. I have no doubt that it was spun out of context over the phone. When the mother appeared, I knew I was in serious trouble. She had been experiencing strange things in her place and this “psychic phenomena” was just too much. As I went to greet them, the staff members were pointing at me while whispering “That’s him! That’s the guy”. “Oh shit” - those were the first words to come to my mind.

I sat down with the troubled girl and began a hypnotic dialogue designed to make her feel less anxious and less fearful. I could tell her beliefs were already set. That means she already believed in spirits and demons. She believed her place was haunted. I took her seriously. I did not laugh at her and try to explain that ghosts aren’t real. This would have made things worse.

I explained to her that I was intuitive and I could sense a lot of fear from her. I didn’t want to push my beliefs on her, I just wanted to deal with her fear. I guided her into some slow breathing and positive suggestions via embedded commands. She instantly felt better. I told her I was not a spiritualist. I did not want to state whether or not spirits are real. However, I made a reference to spirits by saying “You know, these guys feed on fear.” I wanted to force her to reject the fear she was feeling and begin feeling a sense of peace. I also suggested some basic “rituals” to help ease her fear.

In many cultures, the use of salt to cleanse a house of evil is a well known technique. I suggested she cleanse her apartment with salt water. I also suggested that she try some different music. Classical music would calm her nerves more than the rap she had on her mp3 player. I told her that “they” hated classical music and children’s music. She did not realize that the lyrics in certain songs can indeed contain negative information. Along with the slow deep breathing I assured her that she would feel better.

A few hours after the show she returned to the establishment. She seemed calmer now. When I asked her how she felt, she told me about her Native spirituality. She had brought in a Native spiritual healer to smudge her apartment. A traditional ceremony was held for her to ease her suffering and raise the vibrations of the house. She did this all within the time I finished my show. She certainly felt better and thanked me for my advice.

During the whole time, my stage crew was wondering what the heck was going on. To this day they thought I was just messing with the girl. All I did was calm her down. My crew thought I was the one who got it all started with my poltergeist comment. In a sense they were right, my comment triggered a cascade effect. I wanted to be sure. Had I caused any harm?

I asked a co-worker: “Was she scared before I got here, or am I the one who scared her?”. They responded “Oh, no. She’s been freaking out for the last 3 days. It has nothing to do with you.”. You see, I simply stepped into a strange situation at a strange time. I used my skills to make her feel better without demeaning her existing spiritual beliefs. The result was quite positive. To the untrained eyes and ears, I was doing “shock mentalism” to scare people. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Once I saw their fear, I ceased all cold reading attempts and psychological illusion. Can you imagine what would happen if I started doing a full reading along with special effects? The result could have severely damaged this girl’s fragile psychological state.

Some people DO believe in spirits. Although you may feel the need to educate them about what is real and what is not, be forewarned: You are treading on dangerous territory. Spiritual beliefs cannot be changed with brute logic. Some of you may have amazing effects that will amaze and delight audiences. If your goal is to cause fear in people, you may be in for a surprise one day. Consider what happened to Magician Wayne Houchin in the Dominican Republic. Wayne has an effect on the market called “Stigmata”. To many Christians this is offensive. Is it possible that Wayne unintentionally helped to perpetuate the myth that he is a practitioner of “dark arts”? Wayne is an excellent magician and I have seen him freak people out with the stigmata effect. I have also seen him perform a “heart stop”; where he uses psychology and hypnosis to create a strong illusion that his pulse has slowed or stopped. It’s important to realize the serious nature of paranormal effects. Wayne is a good guy, and it seems he was the unfortunate victim of misinformation.

I must commend Penn and Teller for their attitude regarding this matter. They openly admit that what they do is trickery and deception. After Wayne’s incident in the Domincan, I have felt compelled to drop the spiritualist references in my act. I like to tell the audience ahead of time that I’m a trickster and that everything I do is fake. Does this take away from the “magic”? You decide.

Sure, it takes skill to create these illusions. Sleight-of-hand is a lot of fun too. I’m considerate to the feelings of others. If you want to educate people, use your mentalism and sleight of hand to create happy feelings. Some effects really are intended only for select individuals. Make the right choice and carry a variety of effect. Allow yourself the room to escalate or de-escalate the shock value of the illusions you present.

To have a great show, everyone should be as <del>drunk</del> sober as possible. The reason for this is that alcohol <del>helps</del> inhibits concentration in the subjects. Seriously, it’s best for anyone who is really drunk to stay off the stage. I’ve had a puker once, and I want to avoid that at all costs from now on.

The following is also true of anyone who is a seriously mentally ill person. If you or someone you know has a serious mental illness, please do not let them get on the stage. I will always try to deliver positive messages to help people in every way that I can. I’m also going to to mess with all your heads, but you see, some people already have their heads full and so they don’t need to be pushed onto the stage. You will be responsible for the safety of the volunteers, and you will have to make sure everyone waives their rights at the door. Once people enter the performance area, you are 100% responsible for what happens.

I will always act professionally and I will always strive for positivity in my messages. I can assure you 99.999 percent of people will enjoy the benefits of seeing my show. I’ve never had a random occurrence, but it has happened in the history of stage hypnosis. For example, an epileptic man who has a seizure during a show, or a diabetic who goes into shock. It has happened that the hypnotist was blamed initially during these coincidences. Eventually the truth came out about these occurrences. In one incident a young woman blacked out from alcohol poisoning during a hypnosis routine. Everyone thought the hypnotist had hypnotized her and that he couldn’t get her out of the trance! One time, a girl even died during a hypnotism act. I suppose people have died in stranger places. If anything like that happened it is was entirely random and probably would have happened anyways.

Hypnosis is 100% safe. My suggestions are crafted for deep, slow breathing and long term health benefits. Those people who go on stage will be doing some physical things such as dancing, acting out characters and getting their heart rates up. By following simple directions, my hypnosis show can be a hilarious and captivating demonstration of the human mind and it’s possibilities. Unconventional and sometimes shocking, my shows are designed to entertain and amaze. At the same time I like to inject long lasting positive suggestions that will benefit the audience, even those who don’t come up on stage. You will feel more peace in your life. You will attract more good luck by synchronistic links. You will reach into your mind and expand your potential for mental skills. Everyone benefits! In fact, by reading the previous paragraph you feel better and better. That’s the power of suggestion.

Who’s “the BEST?”

To me, being the best means hypnotizing a large portion of the willing audience every time! Sometimes it doesn’t work. It happened to me once. Fortunately, I kept my nerves calm and I didn’t panic. Instead I showed the audience what I could do with MY mind. It turned out to be a pretty good show – and I even got a few people feeling a light trance!

A good hypnosis show requires a hypnotist (me) who has spent enough time doing live shows to know how to work around the surprises that inevitably arise. Live theater has moments that are completely unscripted. I’ve performed for some of the drunkest, loudest, rowdiest crowds Manitoba has to offer. I can assure, something interesting ALWAYS happens during my shows. Usually there’s a meaningful coincidence behind it all, but that’s for you to decide.

I put safety first in my shows so you can rest easy, knowing that I’m a professional – And don’t worry, the worst that can happen is that someone has a psychiatric moment. I warn everyone that this can liberate you, because I give people tools to empower themselves. If someone becomes liberated during one of my shows, don’t worry – it’s just temporary. They will return to their normal selves within 45 minutes, depending on audience participation.

If your kid likes magic, hire me and I’ll bring the best this city’s got. My unique card manipulation can capture the imagination of any mind, young or old. The recommended age for birthday magic is 6 and up. Sometimes, very bright children as young as 4 years old can understand when something disappears or vanishes. When they are very smart, the realization that something “impossible” kicks in and you just watch their brains melt.

“HOW DID HE DO THAT!?!?”

Magicians never tell, right? Well, I make an exception on special days like birthdays. I like to teach a few of my secrets. This way, everyone can remember me and remember the great time we had performing magic together!

There are many kids magicians in Winnipeg. My magic shows are for kids aged 6 to 60. If your children are very young, (3 to 5) they might prefer a clown who does balloon animals. To make your Child’s birthday party extra special, I recommend preparing your goodie bags with magic tricks from Toad Hall. That way, you can include a few easy magic tricks that kids can take home. Most magicians in Winnipeg know about Toad Hall – it’s the oldest and best place to get magic tricks in Winnipeg. As a professional entertainer, I always recommend Toad Hall to parents who want to hire a Magician.

My kids magic show can include a 30 minute magic workshop where the kids will learn how to perform easy tricks. If your kids like Magic, a few tricks from toad hall will make your party a real success!
